The Quick Backstory
Thomas Leonard, the founder of professional Life Coaching and the founder of CoachVille, used to say that: “Coaching is an advanced form of Human Relating”. I was always inspired by that thought. But now, 25 years later, I feel we need to raise the bar and say it in a new way: Coaching REQUIRES advanced Human Connection SKILLS.
In 2001, Thomas and I hosted the first CoachVille Conference in Las Vegas, USA. 1,000 people attended, making it the largest ever coaching event at that time. Still few coaching events have matched it.
At the event, Thomas teased the audience that we were going to create the next level of advanced coaching skills.
I was shocked. He never told me about that part!
AND he invited the group to buy a ticket to the event in Phoenix a few months later.
Then…
we REALLY GOT BUSY.
Over the next 3 months we spoke every day and gathered the CoachVille R&D Team of 100 coaches via conference call several times each week. I was coaching A LOT and Thomas was really good at asking me questions to figure out what I was doing.
Thomas had something I call: The SKILL of SKILLS.
He could listen to a story of something you did and figure out the SKILL that made it possible… and then… his superpower… give it a really good name.
The result of all these explorations and R&D conversations: The 15 Coaching Proficiencies.
We explored and debated every word. Including the word “proficiency”.
“Proficiency” is ADVANCED SKILL.
In Phoenix we led the first ever Coach Intensive where we explored these advanced skills together.
They included:
#01 Engages in Provocative Conversations
#02 Reveals the Person to Themselves
#03 Elicits Greatness.
… all the way to
#15 Respects the Persons Humanity
Now…
24 years later…
I see these advanced coaching skills in a new – and important – way:
These are the Advanced SKILLS of Human Connection.
These are the Advanced SKILLS you need for influence and impact.
These are the Advanced SKILLS you need to thrive in business, leadership and life in the “After AI” Age we are now living in.
AND…
it’s time for us to level up as well.
Something important HAS to change…
We need to provide the Coach Intensive learning experience in a MUCH BETTER WAY than we did in 2001. We need a true “Coach Approach”.
